WHAT IS TERRAZZO AND WHAT ARE THE POSSIBILITIES OF THIS MATERIAL?
The most frequent questions we receive from you.
-
+What is terrazzo?
-
Terrazzo floors are made of a mixture of marble chips of different sizes, dyes, cement, and water. The composition is always at least three quarters marble. This completely distinguishes terrazzo from ordinary cement floors.
Terrazzo is cast onto concrete and then polished. This creates a smooth and even surface, which is then impregnated.
-
+What is the thickness of cast terrazzo?
-
The thickness of terrazzo depends on the choice of stones and their size. The classic thickness of terrazzo is 15 mm to 20 mm. With larger stones, we can reach a final thickness of up to 35 mm.
-
+Is terrazzo sustainable and safe for the environment?
-
Terrazzo was first officially made in Italy in the early 18th century, and was invented by Venetian workers looking for a way to use discarded marble pieces and chips, which is why it can be considered one of the world's first “green” flooring systems.
In keeping with the original premise of material reuse, today’s terrazzo combines exceptional beauty, design flexibility, durability, and incredible ease of maintenance.
-
+How is dilation dealt with?
-
Terrazzo is dilated after four to six metres, depending on the specific project. We will be happy to advise you.
-
+Are there any restrictions on the colours of the floors?
-
Terrazzo has an infinite number of colours to choose from.
-
+Floor finishing?
-
Terrazzo is waxed with a clear wax to keep dirt and water out.
-
+Are the floors suitable for underfloor heating?
-
Yes. Thanks to new technologies our floors are suitable for both hot-water and electric heating.
-
+Follow-up maintenance?
-
Maintenance of terrazzo is very simple. We recommend mopping floors with water and soap or any soap-based product.
-
+What is the floors’ lifetime?
-
The floors’ lifetime is very long. Terrazzo floors laid in apartment buildings in the first third of the twentieth century are still there. This is a big advantage over other materials that have to be replaced, leading to additional costs.
-
+Can I also use terrazzo on vertical surfaces?
-
Yes. You can put it on bathroom walls, use it as tiles in the kitchen, etc. We supply and install large-format terrazzo panels.
-
+I would like to use different stones instead of marble chips. Is that possible?
-
Yes. You can use other stones, even pearls and special glass.
